about US

We Are a Movement of Women Who Refuse to Settle for Less Than the Full Life They Were Made For.

Women of Excellence is a registered Christian trust founded in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1998. Over more than two decades, we have grown from a local gathering of women seeking deeper faith and practical support into a living movement that spans cities, nations, and continents, connected by a shared conviction that women were made for more than they are often permitted to become.

We are not a conference. We are not a ministry programme. We are not a charity in the traditional sense. We are a movement which means that what we build is not primarily structures or systems, but women. Formed, equipped, connected, and released women who go back into their homes, their churches, their workplaces, and their communities carrying something that changes those environments from the inside out.

We do not build programmes for women. We build women who change the world.

WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT WOMEN

At the centre of everything Women of Excellence does is a set of convictions about who women are and what they are for. We believe that a woman is not primarily a role; mother, wife, employee, volunteer but a person, whole, called, complex, and deserving of the kind of formation and support that enables her to live that fullness with courage and clarity.

We believe that women’s development is not a peripheral concern for the Church or for society. It is central to the flourishing of families, communities, and nations. When a woman is equipped spiritually, practically, relationally, economically the effects ripple outward in ways that statistics can barely capture.

We also believe that strength and vulnerability are not opposites. Some of the most courageous things we have witnessed in Women of Excellence have happened in the quiet spaces, a woman admitting she does not have it together, a leader asking for help, a young woman daring to believe she is more than her circumstances suggest. We make room for all of it.

Where Purpose Meets Identity.

WHO BELONGS HERE

Women of Excellence is for women at every stage of life and every level of apparent success or struggle. For the woman navigating the first years of marriage. For the leader who has been leading for decades and is beginning to wonder what she has missed in herself. For the young woman who has not yet been told that her gifts are genuinely needed. For the woman in pain, carrying grief, facing financial pressure, navigating a family crisis, sitting with unanswered questions about her faith. For every woman who has sensed, at some quiet moment, that there must be more.

Our Story

Women of Excellence was founded in 1998 by Pastor Sarah Nyamakura in Harare, Zimbabwe. What began as a response to a specific, observed need, women in the church and community navigating spiritual need, family difficulty, economic vulnerability, and a shortage of honest, grounded support, has grown into something neither she nor the early community could have fully anticipated.

The founding conviction was not complex: that women deserved a space where they could be honest, be resourced, be formed in their faith, and be seen as whole people, not just in their roles, but in their full humanity. That conviction has not changed in twenty-five years. Everything that has been built since is an expression of it.

We did not plan to build a movement. We planned to be faithful — to the women in front of us, and to the God who sent us to them. The movement is what happened as a result.

Our Core Values

  • Faith as Foundation. Everything Women of Excellence does is rooted in a living, active Christian faith. Not religion as performance or cultural convention, but a personal, community-shaping relationship with God, expressed in prayer, in scripture, in the way we treat one another, and in the kind of work we believe we are called to. Faith is not one programme among others. It is the ground on which everything else stands. It shapes our posture toward the women we serve, the decisions we make under pressure, and the reason we show up to the hard work when easier paths exist.
  • Dignity Without Exception. Every woman who encounters Women of Excellence, whether she is a seasoned leader or in the depths of a crisis, whether she is thriving or barely surviving, is treated as a person of inherent worth. We do not categorise women by usefulness, status, or potential. Dignity is not earned here. It is simply the default for the woman at our conference and the woman at our food distribution point alike. This conviction shapes the language we use, the environments we create, and the way we make decisions about who is served first and how.
  • Wholeness Over Performance. We resist the culture, inside the Church and outside it, that asks women to be strong for everyone, to manage their pain privately, and to present a polished version of themselves in every room. Women of Excellence creates space for the whole woman: her strength and her struggle, her calling and her confusion, her faith and her honest questions. And we are committed to the slow, deep work of forming that whole person, not simply informing her. Information can be absorbed in a session. Formation takes seasons. The kind of change we are after happens not through exposure to good ideas but through consistent practice, honest relationship, and sustained accountability. We are committed to the seasons, not just the sessions.
  • Practical Sisterhood. We believe in the sacred ordinariness of daily life, and in the value of teaching and community that works on a Tuesday morning, not just in a conference hall. Our programming is designed to be transferred: from the gathering into the home, the workplace, the community. Wisdom that stays in the room is not wisdom. It is content. And we believe that women carry that wisdom best when they carry it together. Community within Women of Excellence is not a social benefit. It is a theological commitment. Women flourish in genuine relationship with one another, in the vulnerability, the accountability, the celebration, and the support that real sisterhood requires. We build that community intentionally, because it does not happen by accident.
  • Courageous Stewardship. We take the trust placed in us by the women we serve, the donors who support us, and the communities we are embedded in seriously. Our governance structures, our financial practices, and our commitment to safeguarding reflect the conviction that credibility is built slowly and lost quickly. We will not be careless with what we have been entrusted. And the women and communities we serve do not inhabit simple circumstances poverty is complex, family breakdown is complex, leadership without support is complex, grief is complex. We do not offer simple answers to difficult realities. We offer presence, wisdom, and the courage to stay in the room, accountable and honest, even when the room is hard.
